POOL TYPES & ADVANTAGES

GUNITE

Gunite is a mixture of cement, rock, and sand sprayed onto contoured and supported surfaces to build a pool. Gunite is mixed, hydrated, and pumped to the site and air is added separately at the nozzle. Plaster or pebble is usually applied over the gunite. Experience is the key to successful proper placement.

WHAT TO EXPECT
THE GUNITE CONSTRUCTION PHASES

Excavation and Forming

Excavation and forming are the first phases for most residential and commercial projects.  Blueprints and drawings have been approved, Dig-Safe has been contacted, and all permits have been posted. The final location of the pool will have been determined along with final elevation, and dirt trucking will be coordinated. Excavation will commence and the pool perimeter form work constructed.

Structural Steel

The structural steel phase will take one or two days depending on the size of your pool and any additional work required for a raised spa or fountain. This steel cage is the strength that holds the pool structure together. You can also expect to see the floor plumbing starting to take shape prior to this phase of construction.

Shotcrete process

Also called Gunite, this is the process of applying concrete to a structure and commonly used to build or reinforce pools, waterfalls, bridges, tunnels, dams, etc. Gunite is a mixture of cement, rock, and sand which is hydrated and mixed at the site and then sprayed onto contoured and supported surfaces to build a pool. Plaster or pebble is usually applied over the Gunite for texturing.

Plumbing

Plumbing occurs after excavation is complete, and will continue after the steel cage is in place. Once the Gunite shell is shot, the Schedule 40 PVC will be run and the filtration equipment placed. Additional trenching may be required to get the piping from the pool to the filtration equipment, so careful consideration of placement is needed.

Hydraulics

Several variables are considered for precise flow rates through the plumbing systems connected through your pool. Piping size and run, resistance and pump performance are pre-determined for return lines, floor heads, jets, waterfalls, fountains, and other elements.

There are many options to consider when choosing the best placement for your new pool. An experienced EDWARDS representative will survey your yard and discuss all of the details with you, including city codes, considerations for overhead lines, and easements.
